COACH'S NOTEBOOK

Saturday, April 4, 2009 -
Our coaching staff just returned from the University of South Florida Bulls Football Coaching Clinic. It was an enjoyable and informative clinic that covered various areas of football including: techniques and drills on offense, defense, and special teams; overall philosophy; and program organization. Presenters included:

Bob Henriquez, Tampa Catholic High School offensive coordinator;
Larry Scott, USF Offensive Assitant coach;
Kevin Patrick, USF Defensive Line coach;
Carl Franks, USF Running Backs coach;
David Blackwell, USF Linebackers coach;
Mike Simmonds, USF Offensive Line coach;
Joe Tressey, USF Defensive Coordinator;
Jim Leavitt, USF Head Coach;
Tommy Tuberville, former head coach at Auburn;
Rich Bisaccia, Tampa Bay Bucaneers Special Teams coach;
Tony Dungy, former head coach of the Bucaneers and Colts.

We also watched a spring practice on Friday afternoon, in which we saw the drills and techniques covered during the clinic on the field.

We are looking forward to attending this clinic in the future.

This week was "testing" week for the student-athletes in our strength and conditioning program. Players were measured and tested in the following: height; weight; body fat %; squat; clean; bench; 10, 20, & 40 yd dashes; shuttle run; broad jump; and vertical jump. There were several good performances throughout the week that saw two new members, Nic Huether and Tyler Hine, joining the Pirate Elite. There were a large number of improvements in strength, speed, power, and agility, as well as a great improvement in confidence. I am looking forward to the continued hard work from the student-athletes...it will pay off!

Here's the latest recruiting update:

Mikhail Morgan signed a full football scholarship to Quincy University (Quincy, IL), a NCAA Division II football program. Congratulations to Mikhail as he is about to enter a new era of his life.

Sam Thurston visited Geneva College (PA) this week. I look forward to hearing about his visit.

After receiving interest to kick and punt at Cornell College in Iowa, Sam Costa has decided to stay in Florida where he will attend the University of North Florida. Best wishes to Sam as he begins a new chapter of his life.

Patrick Paul visited Valley Forge Military College (PA) and will make his decision shortly. Desmond Bowman is also considering Valley Forge.

Ricky Morgan has received his financial award from the University of St. Francis (IL) and is considering the offer.

This past Monday evening (March 9th), Jack Renkens presented "Recruiting Realities" to Port Charlotte High School athletes and their families. Every student-athlete on our campus received a personal invitation to attend by our Athletic Director, Mr. Vernon.

The presentation, intended for student-athletes who are serious about playing college athletics, was very informative. Parents and athletes learned that there are other opportunities available for their sons or daughters besides the big named schools. Recruiting is a business.

The off-season is well underway. We have a large number of football players working extremely hard and smart. We highly encourage the players in our program to compete in other sports during the winter and spring sport seasons. We have several members of our football program involved in spring sports such as: baseball; tennis; track; and weightlifting. We believe that student-athletes who are involved in other PCHS sports will become better athletes through competiton as long as they follow a few guidelines:

  1. Give 100% effort.
  2. Be committed.
  3. Eat and hydrate properly.
  4. Continue developing your lower body, upper body, and explosive strength by lifting weights (follow our 9-week strength program).
  5. Continue developing your speed.
  6. Continue developing your agility.
  7. Get adequate rest to allow your muscles to repair and rebuild.

Those student-athletes who are not involved in a winter or spring sport are highly encouraged to participate in our off-season strength, speed, and agility program. All participants must have all valid paperwork on file, as required by the FHSAA.

The student-athletes will receive instructional guidance from our qualified coaching staff. Our program is designed with the general athlete in mind. The focus of our program is the development of lower body, upper body, and explosive strength; sprint mechanics; speed enhancement drills; agility drills; plyometric drills; and flexibility.

Be sure to visit "Calendar of Events" for the scheduled days and times for the training sessions.
