FOOTBALL 101
OBJECT: Score more points than the opposing team.
PLAYING AREA: 100 yards (300 feet) long by 53 1/3 yards wide (160 feet). There is an additional 10 yard long area at each end of the field, known as the endzone. The field is marked with lines that are 5 yards apart.
The team with possession of the football (offense) has 4 opportunities (plays) to move the ball towards the opposing team's (defense) end zone. In general, once the offense moves the ball 10+ yards from the start of their possession, they will have an additional 4 plays to advance the ball. With successive 10+ yard gains, the offense will continue to advance the ball towards the opponents end zone. If the offense advances the ball through the end zone they will be awarded 6 points for a touchdown. Once a touchdown is awarded, the ball is placed at the 3-yard line where the offense may elect to attempt to kick the ball through the uprights fro 1 point or go for 2 points by advance the ball through the end zone line by a run or pass play.
The objective of the defensive team is to prevent the offense from scoring more points than the offense.
